Telehealth therapy in New York
Whether a therapist can see you by video in New York turns on where you are physically sitting during the session and what authority the clinician holds for that place — not on where their office is. A New York license can be confirmed by name, date and standing in the state's own public register; anything beyond that, including practice in another state, is a separate question with a separate answer.

Four questions before a first video session
Where will you be sitting?
Not where the therapist's office is — where you are, during the session. That location is what decides which state's rules apply to the care. If you live in New York and work in New Jersey, a Thursday lunchtime session from your desk is not the same question as a Sunday session from your kitchen.
Is the clinician authorized for that place?
A New York license is a New York fact. It does not by itself answer whether the same clinician may see you while you are somewhere else. That can require another license, a registration, a compact privilege, or some other permission from that jurisdiction.
Does the register agree?
New York's official public record is the NYSED Online Verification Search, held by the New York State Education Department, Office of the Professions. You can search it yourself in a few minutes, and you should not have to take anyone's badge for it.
What happens if something goes wrong mid-session?
Ask before you start: how does the clinician reach you, or emergency services near you, if a session goes somewhere neither of you planned? A therapist several hours away needs an answer to that, and a good one will already have thought about it.

The register is public and the search takes a few minutes. Match the person, the profession, the jurisdiction and the status, then write down the date you looked — an undated screenshot is incomplete evidence, which is exactly why every receipt on this site carries a date.

Many do. What decides it is not the video itself but where you are physically located during the session and what authority the clinician holds for that location. Ask the clinician directly and confirm their license in the state's own register.
Can a therapist licensed in New York treat me while I am in another state?
Do not assume so from a New York license alone. The clinician must hold whatever license, registration, compact privilege, or other authority the place you are sitting in requires. That is a question for the clinician and that state's authority, not for a directory.
How do I check a New York therapist's license myself?
Use the NYSED Online Verification Search and match the name, profession, location and status. Note the date you checked, because a registry result is a fact about a moment, not a permanent state.
Does Couch Commons verify that a clinician may practice by telehealth?
No. We check licenses against state registers and print the date. Where a clinician states an additional telehealth registration or compact privilege, we label it as their own dated statement resting on a license we did check — and we say plainly that we have not checked the privilege itself.
Is online therapy as good as in person?
That is not a question a directory can answer for you. Format suits people differently depending on privacy at home, technology, scheduling, and what you are working on. Ask the clinician how they decide, and what they would do if the format were not working.
Will my insurance cover a telehealth session in New York?
We do not know, and any site that tells you it does without checking your plan is guessing. Confirm with the clinician and with your plan before the first session.
