In Matthew’s own words

Hi, I’m Matthew Sexton, founder of CouchCommons.com and an independent therapist serving adults in Floral Park, New York, and through telehealth.

I appreciate that you found me. But I need you to do something before you choose a therapist:

**Pick any therapist here but me.**

Seriously.

CouchCommons is just beginning its journey, and right now my profile may be one of the first you see. But this platform was not built to funnel everyone toward one therapist. It was built to become a community of local, independent therapists and independent practices so you can find someone who actually fits you.

Therapy should not feel like an assembly line.

In some corporate mental health, EAP, and highly standardized care models, treatment can be shaped by session limits, symptom scores, utilization targets, and other metrics. Measurement can be useful, but a number cannot capture everything that changes in therapy.

A lower score does not necessarily mean the work is finished.

Four sessions do not necessarily resolve what brought someone to therapy.

And progress does not always move in a straight line that fits neatly on a dashboard.

Independent therapists have the ability to build their practices around the people they serve. That can mean developing a longer-term therapeutic relationship, adjusting the approach when something is not working, and recognizing forms of progress that are difficult to reduce to a score.

That is what CouchCommons is trying to protect: **therapy that remains human, local, independent, and centered on the person seeking help.**

So please, don’t automatically pick me.

Read the profiles. Compare therapists. Look at their specialties, approaches, experience, location, availability, and how they describe their work. Ask questions. Find a qualified independent therapist or independent therapy practice that feels appropriate for what you need.

If that person happens to be me, great.

If it is another therapist on CouchCommons, even better. That means this is working the way it was supposed to.

### Frequently Asked Questions

**Do you provide therapy in Floral Park, NY?** Yes. I serve adults in Floral Park, New York, and offer telehealth options.

**What types of therapy do you use?** My approaches include ACT, CBT, DBT, and Motivational Interviewing. The approach should serve the person—not the other way around.

**Why choose an independent therapist?** Some people specifically seek independent therapists because they want care delivered through a therapist-owned practice rather than a large corporate mental health organization. CouchCommons helps people discover and compare independent therapists and practices so they can decide what works for them.

**How do I choose the right therapist?** There is no universally “best” therapist. Look for someone whose experience, specialties, therapeutic approach, communication style, logistics, and availability align with what you need. Read more than one profile and ask questions before deciding.

**Do I have to choose Matthew Sexton?** Absolutely not. In fact, I hope you explore CouchCommons and consider every therapist who might be a good fit.
