Therapist license lookup by state
To check a therapist's license, use the official register of the state that issued it. This table names that register for each state Couch Commons operates in, links the lookup, and says when we last checked it. It is the same list our license receipts cite. The data is free to reuse.

How to read it
- A register shows the record the state holds on the date you search. It does not show availability, fees, insurance, fit, or results.
- Some states run one portal for many professions (Connecticut eLicense, New Jersey MyLicense, California's DCA search). Choose the person search and match the profession.
- Counseling Compact membership comes from the compact's own member map, read 2026-09-24. It covers professional counselors only, not social workers, marriage and family therapists, or psychologists.
- Found an error? Report it. Corrections are dated on that page.
Common questions
Where do I check a therapist's license?
In the official register of the state that issued it. This table names that register for New York (NYSED), New Jersey (MyLicense), Connecticut (eLicense), Massachusetts, Colorado, California, Texas, Florida, and Illinois (IDFPR), with a link to each lookup.
Can I use this data?
Yes. The CSV is free to download and reuse. Please link to this page as the source and check the official register itself before relying on a result.
Does a Counseling Compact member state mean a counselor can practise across state lines?
No, not by itself. As of 2026-09-24, the Counseling Compact says privileges are live only for licensees in Arizona, Minnesota, and Ohio. Membership is a law the state passed; each counselor still needs a privilege.
