California license verification

BBS license lookup: check a California therapist's license

To verify a therapist's license in California, use the DCA License Search, which the Board of Behavioral Sciences (BBS) links to for license and registration status. BBS licenses clinical social workers (LCSW), marriage and family therapists (LMFT), professional clinical counselors (LPCC), and educational psychologists (LEP), and registers associates. BBS says the search shows the most recent status and public documents about any actions taken. A match supports the record on the date checked; it does not prove availability, fees, insurance, or fit.

Official CA therapist license lookup: step by step

  1. Open the DCA License Search. It is the search BBS links to for checking a license or registration.
  2. Choose the license type that matches the clinician's claim, such as Licensed Clinical Social Worker or Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist.
  3. Search by last and first name, or by license or registration number if you have it.
  4. Match the credential to the claim. An associate registration is not the same as a full license.
  5. Read the status as shown, open any public documents about actions taken, and record the date of the lookup.

What to match in the state record

  • Clinician name
  • License or registration type
  • License or registration number
  • Status (for example current or expired)
  • Public documents about any actions taken
  • Lookup date

Match the person, profession, and jurisdiction together. A similar name, a practice record, or a credential from another state is not the same evidence.

Associates are registered, not licensed

BBS registers Associate Marriage and Family Therapists (AMFT), Associate Clinical Social Workers (ASW), and Associate Professional Clinical Counselors (APCC). Check that the record type matches what the person says they hold.

Psychologists are on a different board

Psychologists in California are licensed by the Board of Psychology, not BBS. The Board of Psychology also points to the DCA License Search for verification, so choose the psychology license type there.

How Couch Commons uses the result

Couch Commons records the license number, issuing state, profession, source, status, and date checked, and a public profile shows them as a dated receipt. Joining starts a membership and onboarding; it does not purchase verification or placement in the directory.

If the official source cannot give a clear match, we ask it again every day. Until it matches the official record, the clinician does not receive a license-check receipt.Read the complete verification method.
