Illinois license verification
IDFPR license lookup: check an Illinois therapist's license
To verify a therapist's license in Illinois, use the License Look Up run by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR). Choose the license type, such as Social Worker, Counselor, Prof, Mar and Fam Therapist, or Clin Psychologist, and search by name or license number. IDFPR says License Look Up is approved as a primary source for verification and that single-license data is updated daily. A match supports the record on the date checked; it does not prove availability, fees, insurance, or fit.

Official IL therapist license lookup: step by step
- Open IDFPR's Check a License page and choose the Professional Regulation License Look Up.
- Pick the license type. Social workers are under Social Worker, counselors under Counselor, Prof, marriage and family therapists under Mar and Fam Therapist, and psychologists under Clin Psychologist.
- Enter the license number or the clinician's first and last name, and complete the CAPTCHA the search asks for.
- Match the license type to the clinician's claim. An LSW is not an LCSW, and an LPC is not an LCPC.
- Read the status exactly as shown and record the date of the lookup.

What to match in the state record
- Clinician name
- License type
- License number
- License status
Match the person, profession, and jurisdiction together. A similar name, a practice record, or a credential from another state is not the same evidence.
Two levels in social work and counseling
IDFPR licenses social workers as Licensed Social Worker (LSW) and Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), and counselors as Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) and Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC). Both levels sit under the same license type in the search, so read the exact title on the record.
Discipline is a separate search
IDFPR publishes enforcement actions on its own Review Enforcement Actions page, and says disciplinary documents are requested through a Freedom of Information Act request. A clean License Look Up result is not a statement that no complaint is open.
How Couch Commons uses the result
Couch Commons records the license number, issuing state, profession, source, status, and date checked, and a public profile shows them as a dated receipt. Joining starts a membership and onboarding; it does not purchase verification or placement in the directory.
If the official source cannot give a clear match, we ask it again every day. Until it matches the official record, the clinician does not receive a license-check receipt.Read the complete verification method.
Questions about Illinois therapist license verification
Where is the IDFPR license lookup?
On IDFPR's Check a License page, through the Professional Regulation License Look Up at online-dfpr.micropact.com.
How do I verify an LCSW in Illinois?
In the IDFPR License Look Up, choose Social Worker as the license type, then search by name or license number. Check that the record says Licensed Clinical Social Worker, not Licensed Social Worker.
Is the IDFPR lookup an official primary source?
IDFPR says License Look Up has been approved as a primary source for verification by The Joint Commission, the National Committee for Quality Assurance, and the American Osteopathic Association's Healthcare Facilities Accreditation Program.

No. License status and appointment availability are separate facts. Availability should carry its own confirmation date.
