Texas license verification
BHEC license search: check a Texas therapist's license
To verify a therapist's license in Texas, use the Behavioral Health Executive Council (BHEC) Online Search/Verify a License tool. BHEC oversees the boards for marriage and family therapists, professional counselors, psychologists, and social workers. BHEC says the results show license status, first licensure date, expiration date, and any publicly available disciplinary history, and count as primary source verification. A match supports the record on the date checked; it does not prove availability, fees, insurance, or fit.

Official TX therapist license lookup: step by step
- Open BHEC's Verify a License page and select Online Search/Verify a License.
- Search by name, by name for a specified license type, by license number, or by city or county.
- Match the license type to the clinician's claim. An LPC, LMFT, LCSW, and psychologist license come from different boards under BHEC.
- Read the status, dates, and any specialty designation exactly as shown.
- If the result lists Reports Available for Download, open them to read the public disciplinary actions. Record the date of the lookup.

What to match in the state record
- Clinician name
- License type
- License status
- Date of first licensure
- Expiration date
- Specialty designation, such as supervisor
- Publicly available disciplinary history
Match the person, profession, and jurisdiction together. A similar name, a practice record, or a credential from another state is not the same evidence.
One council, four boards
BHEC covers the Texas State Board of Examiners of Marriage and Family Therapists, the Texas State Board of Examiners of Professional Counselors, the Texas State Board of Examiners of Psychologists, and the Texas State Board of Social Worker Examiners. The search covers all four.
Some things are not in the public search
BHEC says addresses and the status of current complaints or investigations are not available through the public search. A clean result is not a statement that no complaint is open.
How Couch Commons uses the result
Couch Commons records the license number, issuing state, profession, source, status, and date checked, and a public profile shows them as a dated receipt. Joining starts a membership and onboarding; it does not purchase verification or placement in the directory.
If the official source cannot give a clear match, we ask it again every day. Until it matches the official record, the clinician does not receive a license-check receipt.Read the complete verification method.
